Pounamu o Ōtaki

Bean harvesting and building a hugeling

Poumanu o Ōtaki were busy at work on the day the judges toured the Greener Neighbourhood groups:

While Toni Thatcher and Maraea Maraea did the hugeling, Rotaana Smith-Hill, Mereana Winterburn, Denise and the tamariki spilt the beans in prep for spring planting.

I oti i a mātou he ‘hugel’ i te rā nei.

The pit is about 20 inches deep. We layered big wood pieces then woody scraps, some greenery, the contents of the compost bin (mostly unrotted), good compost from the bin, a bit of clayey dirt (dug out of the hole), a thick layer of lawn clippings, a bit more original dirt, ash from the fire, another layer of good compost and then covered with sacks. I forgot to wet down the mix with water from the duck pond. Something to do in the morning…
